I was contacted by this mom when she saw a friend's maternity session on social media. She was so excited to have found me because she described my style as exactly what she had been looking for. In her words, "I want the beautiful light and the real connections between us, not some cheesy staged photos that don't show who we really are." My response? "You've found the right person." Emotional connection showing your family together and the love you have for each other are exactly why I love to photograph families. I want to photograph families as they are. No fake cheesy smiles. A couple of weeks before their session, I went to their home to help her "shop" from her own closet and we pulled together great outfits for the whole family. Ultimately, clients decide what they want to wear: but images always look so much more beautiful if they choose to have me help style them for their session. I shoot in my specific locations weekly, so at this point I know what will produce the best images for my clients. Atlanta Maternity Photographer | All the way from Nashville

When Amber contacted me a few weeks ago about reserving a maternity session in the studio, I noticed that her area code was for Nashville, TN. I found out that she actually lived in Nashville and was driving four hours to Atlanta for her session! This is not the first time I've had a client drive from several hours away to work with me (I've had clients from Michigan and South Carolina come for sessions with me), but I'm always honored when I hear clients want to spend extra travel time to have me be their photographer. Amber came to the studio the weekend before her shoot for her maternity fitting and to look through the dresses. She had seen several dresses already that previous clients had worn, and knew exactly what she wanted to try on. I think she tried on over 10, and selected a total of three. The following weekend she returned to the studio with her husband, and we had a lot of fun shooting her session! How sweet is this family? I had such a wonderful time working with them for their maternity, Fresh 48, and newborn sessions and look forward to seeing them in the studio again for milestone sessions! Many of my clients choose to book multiple sessions with me, and I love getting to know them along the way. Mom's top and dad's shirt are available as part of my studio wardrobe. I'm more than happy give suggestions for what to wear for your studio session if you prefer to bring your own clothing. Atlanta Maternity Photographer | A Sweet Moment in the Gardens

When Shay contacted me to reserve her maternity session, she set up time to come to the studio for a complimentary wardrobe fitting and to meet me beforehand. She wasn't sure which location she wanted to shoot in and was between the field and the gardens. After discussing what she would be wearing and what her vision was for her maternity photos, we determined that the gardens would be the best location for her. We really wanted to showcase her gorgeous fitted gown and beautiful growing belly! The dress and sash are a part of my studio wardrobe available to all booked clients!

Atlanta Family Photographer | Love and Hugs

This sweet family of three traveled all the way to Atlanta from Columbia, SC for their session with me in the field that I love to shoot in. Mom texted over several outfit options that she was considering, and we narrowed it down to what they wore that evening. This session was shot in March 2015 - I have so many sessions to share but am often just too busy working with my clients to blog sessions right away. 

I had so much fun with this family, and enjoyed watching them just love each other and be together. That's what family portraits are about for me. If we manage a shot of everyone looking and smiling, that's wonderful: but that's not at all the goal. The goal is to capture your family just as you are in that moment. It makes for a much more relaxing session too since you just have to be yourselves and have fun together. Who wouldn't enjoy that? I also love to pull mom and dad aside for some photos of just the two of them. So many of my clients haven't had any couples photos taken since their engagement and wedding photos. Things have changed a lot in your lives as parents, but your love for one another is still there - so I think it's so important to document that too during your family session. Someday the kids will be all grown up and out of the house, and it'll be just the two of you again.

Atlanta Birth Photographer | The Importance of Discretion

I had a client ask me a question today when they came to the studio for their consultation for The Birth Session. It was a simple question. They asked me, "What makes you different from other birth photographers besides your shooting and editing style?" Obviously, there's not just ONE answer to that question, but I wanted to touch on one of the answers that I gave them because I think it's so important that anyone considering birth photography take the following into consideration - whether they're here in Atlanta looking for a birth photographer or not! 

When you hire me as your birth photographer you can take comfort in the fact you are hiring someone who understands the importance of discretion and respects your privacy - and places that at the forefront of your entire experience from beginning to end. 

(1) I won't share identifiable images of you or your baby online unless I am specifically requested to. I never identify clients by a searchable name on my website. Some of the names that I use aren't even the real names! It's a very small world. Would you want a future potential boss of yours or your husband to see your labor and delivery or private moments between your new family? These are things that new expectant parents don't think about. Once it's out there on the Internet, you can never erase it. 

(2) Your baby's private parts will never be shown in a photo, even if it's unidentifiable. Unfortunately, we live in a world where we have to worry about this. I see far too many birth photographers sharing photos with baby bits prominently shown. I am a mother of two little girls, so needless to say - seeing images violating the privacy of a minutes old baby saddens and angers me. 

(3)  I do not require a model release to hire me. There are some birth photographers that will NOT accept you as a client unless you sign a model release. This is their right as a business owner to require, but it's also your right as a client to have privacy. So, if privacy is important to you, make sure that a model release isn't required and that they will not share any images without your express permission. 

The truth is: I have so many amazing and emotional birth images that I would love for potential clients to see - but it's not my birth. It's yours. You, your partner, and your baby deserve the utmost privacy, respect, and discretion. Did you know that roughly 75% of my births are not shared online anywhere in any form?

(4) I never share links and passwords to birth films with inquiries or people who ask. I can tell you that I have run into midwives and doctors who were in attendance that ask if they can see the photos or video. I inform them that they must ask their patient and that I am not at liberty to share. Additionally, all potential clients who inquire must come to the studio to meet with me for a consultation.  These potential clients can then view birth films that I have been given permission to share - and they view them sitting right next to me on my iPad. There is no danger of your private moments being stolen and shared with the world.

Atlanta Maternity Photographer | The Gardens

For the past year, my maternity sessions have had a choice of two locations: the field or the studio. I'm excited to announce a third location choice: the gardens! This special location is in intown Atlanta, and I shoot sessions there on weekdays during the late afternoons. There is very limited weekend availability for this location. The gardens are perfect for those who prefer a more manicured look with gorgeous architectural features - many of which are shown in the images below. 

I loved shooting this session in the gardens last winter. Even though it was freezing cold in the month of December, my clients toughed it out and the final images were totally worth it! As a note, these dresses are not in my studio wardrobe as my client purchased them months before her session. I have many lovely options available for clients that would look beautiful in the gardens, and I offer complimentary styling assistance if you prefer to shop for your own outfit or use pieces already in your closet.

Atlanta Maternity Photographer | In the studio

Laura contacted me at the last minute for a maternity session. She had taken a while to show in her pregnancy (a problem lots of us tall girls have, including me!) , so she decided at 36 weeks that she wanted to document her pregnancy. She decided on a studio session, and she came to my studio on Monday afternoon.

Atlanta Maternity Photographer | Happiness matters

When Myka contacted me at the beginning of the summer to ask about a maternity shoot, I was excited! Myka is the mastermind and entrepreneur behind WAX Atlanta, BLINK Brow Bar, and BUFF Nail Bar, which is over by the Krog Street Market. She also has one of the coolest lifestyle blogs over at HighBrow Hippie. I've been a client at Wax almost since it opened, and I can't recommend the salon highly enough. Atlanta Newborn Photographer | All the tiny things

I spend some time during my newborn sessions capturing all the little details of your sweet baby. All the tiny things that make up the whole. Their little fingers, cute little noses, pouty lips, and long eyelashes. I want my clients to have these memories for a lifetime and to be able to leaf through their album when their baby is all grown up and remember exactly how they looked. The rest of my newborn sessions are focused on you with your new baby and portraits of your baby in naturally occurring poses. Atlanta Newborn Photographer | When two become three

Atlanta Maternity Photographer | Waiting on Baby Harper

Gerica contacted me several months in advance of her maternity session. Her maternity pictures were extremely important to her, and she had a specific vision in mind. My work lined up with that vision, so I was pleased to work with her. She sent over several photos of dresses that she was considering for her session, and I gave her my input and advice on the best selection and sizing. The dress she chose was perfect, and had split front to allow for some of the open front bare belly images that she wanted.

Gerica's husband was a real sweetie and lots of fun to be around. He high fived me at the end of our session since it only took about 25 minutes! I keep my maternity sessions easy for expectant parents and don't require them to move around a lot. My sessions are about natural interaction and emotional connection between couples. We always end up laughing a lot - every dad comments at the end about how much easier (and fun) it was then they thought it would be! 

Baby Harper has since arrived and is GORGEOUS just like her mommy! Congrats to the new parents!

Atlanta Maternity Photographer | New additions to the studio wardrobe!

I love having a studio wardrobe for clients. It's one less thing for you to worry about when planning your session, and so many of my clients are relieved that they don't have to shop for something while pregnant. I have an assortment of dresses to fit XS-XL and for every kind of body type. Some clients love their arms and want to show those off, while others would prefer to keep them covered.

The best part of my studio wardrobe? The pieces aren't just for maternity clients - they're for newborn clients and family sessions too! I carefully hand select all additions to my studio wardrobe to fit BOTH pregnant and non pregnant moms. Atlanta Maternity Photographer | An intimate studio session

My maternity sessions are not all done outdoors. I have many clients who choose the studio. Sometimes it's because they aren't outdoor people, and Atlanta can be oppressively hot during the summer! And sometimes it's because they prefer more intimate maternity images. This gorgeous mama and I had so much fun shooting her session in the studio! Erica arrived with her hair and makeup done, and looked absolutely fabulous!

Many clients are nervous about the way they look since the body changes so much during pregnancy. Rest assured, I know exactly how to photograph pregnant mamas at the most flattering and beautiful angles. You may be nervous at the beginning of our session (this is normal!) but I promise to have you laughing and relaxed by the end! Atlanta Newborn Photographer | Big Sister

As the mother of two sweet girls that are just 22 months apart, one of my favorite things about getting to be their mom has been watching the relationship develop between the two of them. I still clearly remember the moment that Lily met her little sister for the first time - the look of awe on her face as she held her for the first time and feeling like my heart would burst when I saw them together. I am fortunate enough to have a photo of that moment, so it is a memory forever frozen in time, and will be one of my favorite images for the rest of my life. 

I love when older siblings come into the studio to participate in newborn sessions, and my goal is to capture their excitement and amazement over their brand new baby as well as the natural interactions between them.

This little cutie pie was so great with her little brother. I was actually there in the hospital room with her family when she met him for the very first time as part of their Fresh 48 session at Northside Hospital. 

She arrived ready to have fun at the newborn session a couple of weeks later, and was so excited to participate. This big sister just loved holding baby brother and playing with his hands. It was so precious how she talked softly to him and held his hand in hers. 

I always start with sibling and whole family shots as soon as baby is sound asleep so that the older kids can be on their merry way and go and play once we finish up with them . We all know toddlers don't have the longest attention span, so I work hard to make newborn sessions as fun,  painless, and easy as possible for all involved!

Atlanta Maternity Photographer | Enjoying the Wait

This sweet couple was such a joy to work with! They drove over an hour to have me photograph their maternity session. Mama's sister is a professional photographer from back home in Iowa and helped her choose a photographer here in Atlanta… which just so happened to be me. I seem to photograph a lot of photographers and their family members, which is just fine with me! This couple elected to wait until delivery to find out if they were having a boy or girl, which I think is just so much fun. (I waited to find out with my two girls until they were born, so I may be a little bit biased!) 

What's your guess? Boy or girl?! 

I've been so lucky with gorgeous weather this summer for all of my sessions, and this was no exception. The weather was cooler, and the sunset was perfect with just a few clouds overhead. We shot their in 26 minutes. My maternity sessions take no longer than 30-45 minutes, so almost every single expectant dad is a big fan when we wrap up. I've heard stories about outdoor sessions taking up to two hours, and just can't imagine how that's any fun.

Atlanta Newborn Photographer | Baby smiles and little toes

Sometimes I get lucky during newborn sessions and catch the hint of a smile. I know it's supposedly "just gas" but I'm not sure I really believe that. I think babies might actually have something to smile about… after nine months of being inside, they're out, and have snuggled with their loving parents pretty much non stop. What's not to smile about?

During my sessions, I focus on the little parts that make your baby who they are. Things like their teensy little toes (trust me, they are TINY… and you will wonder how in the world baby feet can grow as fast as they do), their little fists, eyelashes, and sweet pouty lips. You may think you can memorize your baby's every feature with the hours upon hours you spend staring at them in those first few weeks but I'm here to tell you, the mind's memory fades and is not accurate. I know this myself with my two little girls. I can't tell you how many times I've looked at their newborn pictures and marveled at how different they look than what I remember. I'm so glad that I have their newborn days preserved with a memories that won't ever fade away and that I can share those with them. It is my honor to be able to give new families the same gift, and the driving force behind my passion for newborn photography and why I shoot the way I do.
