Atlanta Maternity Photographer | A Family Maternity session at the field

Ashley contacted the studio to ask about scheduling a family maternity session at the field location. She was excited to be expecting baby #3, a girl after two boys! We let her know we had a couple of dates available and then scheduled her maternity fitting appointment at the studio.

Ashley let us know that she was pretty tall (5'11" to be exact) and that she was concerned we wouldn't have anything that would fit her. I'm a member of the tall girls club at exactly six feet with no shoes, so I TOTALLY understood her worry! I hate when dresses that are supposed to be floor length look like a midi dress on me and when sleeves that should be wrist length barely make it to 3/4 of my arm. Our wardrobe has been personally curated by me and fits a wide variety of heights and weights fitting size 0-14/ some 16. Our most petite female client was 4'10", and our tallest was 6'2". They all found something they loved and that worked well for their shape and tastes. If you prefer to wear your own clothing, that's totally ok! The wardrobe is not by any means a requirement. It's simply there as a perk to you should you wish to use it. We'll send our style guide to you to help with choosing the best clothing from your own closets and provide input should you want some. We love helping our clients look and feel their best in whatever way we can.

The evening of their session, we met at the field location! Her boys were the cutest, and her husband wasn't really excited about photos. I asked him to give me 15 minutes of his time and then I'd cut him loose. He agreed, and was glad that most of our time together was simply him being a dad and husband. The vast majority of my dad clients don't really love having their photos taken. While I can't promise I'll convert them to loving it, i CAN promise that I'll make it as easy as possible on them. Just with a positive attitude and willingness to have fun, and the rest will take care of itself!

During our session, it was SO hot outside, but we were fortunate that a breeze swept through a few times. I love movement in images, so I took full advantage of how it was moving Ashley's dress and captured some of my favorite maternity photos that I've ever taken with the wind and a dress. Ashley chose those for her final gallery, so it's safe to say she loved them as well! Here are just a few of my favorite images of this family's session!

Atlanta Newborn Photography | Baby Grant

I first worked with Brittany when her first baby was born! You can see big sister Ava's newborn session images by clicking here. I worked with them again for a fall family session when Ava was sitting up at our gardens location, and was thrilled to hear from her to let me know baby #2 was on the way and she wanted to schedule a newborn session for him.

Brittany asked to work with Margaret again for her hair and makeup - she's become such a big fan of our HMUA add on and has used them for all her sessions with us. When you've just had a baby, you're tired and sore, and sacrificing more sleep to try and get yourself ready sounds pretty much like the worst thing ever. Here in our studio, we take that stress away for new moms. I can't tell you how many of our clients have showed up in sweatpants and a comfy shirt. We'll get you settled with a snack, something to drink, and I'll whisk your baby to the newborn room to get started on the session. I want to clarify something that we are asked a lot: adding on HMUA services does NOT add more time to your session. I photograph babies alone regardless, and that's what I'll be doing while you're in the hair and makeup chair!

Grant was a sleepy little babe, and only needed to nurse once during his session. However you choose to feed your little one - we support that! We have nursing pillows here in the studio for our mamas and our HMUA team are experts at working with new mamas. Your baby directs the show, so if they need to eat, I'll bring them to you to do so.

I actually love when babies start waking up during their newborn solo portraits. If they're calm and not too hungry, they're usually wide eyed and curious, and make the cutest little expressions. I'm there at the ready to capture as many of those as I can. I love little yawns, stretches, tiny little sneezes, sleepy smiles, and puckered lips. They're just adorable!

As I was finishing up with Grant, Brittany was also ready to go. Daddy and big sister Ava arrived, and we got straight to work. When we have a toddler sibling, we always start right away with some family images and parent images. Depending on your toddler's personality and temperament that day, we'll take some sibling only images. Ava was a great listener and already used to "holding" Grant, so these images were very easy to set up and take in just seconds. We always have mom and dad right there for safety purposes. Sometimes a toddler just isn't feeling their baby sibling, and that's ok! We default to images of them together with a parent holding them. Our studio has a unique marriage of lifestyle and natural posing when it comes to our approach. During family time together in front of my camera you will often hear me ask you NOT to look at the camera. I want you to look at your newest addition, and to encourage your older child(ren) to interact with the baby. These are how we get the most beautiful and authentic images that really show who you are as a family and highlight the love that you all have for one another. It's the beginning of the wildest, and the best, ride of your life!

If you're expecting a baby or already a parent and looking for a newborn, maternity, or family photographer - CONGRATULATIONS!!!!  I would love to work with you to create images that you will love for a lifetime. Atlanta Family Photographer | A Mommy & Son session with Lincoln & Gus

I first worked with this mama when I photographed a family session when they were just a family of three. They booked their family session as a birthday gift to their son, Gus - because she wanted him to have documentation of their love for him for the rest of his life. How sweet is that?! You can see their family session images by clicking here

When Ana had baby boy #2, she contacted the studio to schedule a mommy and me session. She worked with Margaret again for her HMUA services as she loved working with her so much the first time around. I was so excited to meet their new addition, Lincoln and squealed over how cute he was! He has the sweetest big brown eyes and is such a serious little guy. Big brother Gus is an incredible and loving big brother. I loved seeing how Ana and Gus' relationship had developed since the last time I had seen them too. I think that all of us moms wonder if our oldest child might feel a little less unloved or a little bit neglected when we have our second, but I think it's safe to say Gus is very secure in just how much his mama loves him!

Mommy and me sessions are a lot of fun. It's honestly you just coming in and loving your babies! I'll make sure that you're in the best positions and give you some guided direction for interaction if you need it. Most moms need no help when it comes to snuggling. A lot of moms worry that their children aren't going to sit still or are going to be too wild during a session. They might be running around and rambunctious, but guess what? That's normal! I always remind mamas we only need 1/800th of a second to get an image, and I have so many tricks and little games to play to get those sweet moments even if you have a wild one. I'm a mom of three, so trust me... I get it. My own home is organized chaos and the decibel level is off the charts sometimes. Nothing fazes me. I promise.

These two guys were FUN to photograph! I ended up holding baby Lincoln on a hip while photographing just Ana and Gus together. I think it's so important for mamas of multiple children to have individual images with each of their babies, as well as together. While I love to photograph just siblings together, Lincoln wasn't quite stable enough to sit alone, and Gus wasn't quite big enough to hold him alone so we settled with Ana holding them while they interacted.

All final galleries are delivered in both color and black and white to my clients so they have both versions. I absolutely adored the images from this session in black and white and am choosing to share only black and white images below. Enjoy looking through a few of my favorites!

Atlanta Family Photographer | Melanie & her girls

I've known Melanie for a long time - we have daughters (our middle ones) born in the same month and year! I first met her before she was even married, and photographed a family session for them long before they had their third child. I was so excited when she contacted me asking to schedule a mommy and me session in the studio for herself and her girls.

Melanie wasn't sure of what to wear and expressed some concern about that. We sent her our studio style guide which is a short and sweet document that helps you pull together a cohesive look for your family. Don't think that you're limited to neutrals! We see plenty of color in our studio and on location sessions - the style guide covers the best palettes and mixing and matching colors/patterns too. If you're still a bit stuck after looking through the guide, or want to come to the studio for a style consultation - that's what we're here for! We have tons of mamas come to the studio to either borrow from the wardrobe or bring an armful of clothes for their family session. We'll sort through everything together and talk through it, and you'll leave fully confident in your choice. I'm a mom of three, so I know how busy life is with little ones! If you simply cannot get to the studio, we can chat via email instead with snapped phone photos of what you're considering. However you choose to enlist our help, we'll make it as easy and stress free for you as we possibly can!

Melanie is seriously one of the kindest people I have the pleasure of knowing, and is such a loving and warm mother. Her older daughters are a bit on the shy side with new people. I work with a lot of children who are shy or have severe separation anxiety! Please let us know in advance of your session if you think this might be an issue, and we'll talk through some ways to make it a bit easier for your child. Their comfort and security is my utmost priority, and I have so many workarounds for every situation that pops up. These gals warmed up quickly to me and we had lots of fun together!

When a mom has multiple children, I always photograph groups and individuals. Each of your children deserve to have a photo of themselves with their mama to have forever. Sometimes one child might not be feeling it for a group photo, and that's perfectly fine! I also love to grab a few of just your little ones. Our flow is determined by our little subjects. With patience and positivity, we'll get everyone participating and having a great time.

We played a few silly and goofy games to get the girls laughing and having fun. I always tell people not to judge me for whatever I have to do to get kids engaged and laughing. There have been instances of dancing, very off-key singing, jumping up and down, and making really weird noises that a baby finds hilarious for some unknown reason. Whatever it takes!

At the very end of our time together, we piled the girls up in a chair together. I just love the dynamic of these three sisters... and the progression of the images. Baby sister was ALL DONE with the snuggles and let us all know!

I can't wait to see these little ladies in the studio again for their second visit with Santa this year!

Atlanta Baby Photographer | A Mommy & Me session with Jessica and Theo

I first met Theo at his newborn session which you can view by clicking here.  He came into the studio at just a month old for our Santa event! I was excited to see him again at his six month milestone for a mommy and me session in the studio!

His mama had her makeup done by our lead HMUA, Margaret. Add on hair and makeup services are available for sessions - just ask when you inquire! We have such an amazing team of the best in Atlanta who are incredibly experienced with every skin type and tone. They are true experts at enhancing your best features while keeping it true to who you are. They'll look at any ideas or inspiration you have for your look and tweak them to work best for your unique face. I truly can't recommend them enough! Fact about me: I don't wear makeup (I don't own any at the moment!) and I always tap one of the members of my team for their services when I have a special event or am being photographed myself.

Not every six month old is sitting unassisted! Babies grow and develop at their own pace. When it comes to the six month milestone, it's really parent preference as to when they want their baby photographed. Some want it during their sixth month, some want it the exact date they're six months, and others prefer to wait until they're sitting alone - which can be between 6-9 months depending on the individual baby. There is no "right" or "wrong" time - your baby will be adorable regardless of when you choose to schedule their session! When babies aren't sitting up alone yet, we use mom's arms! This little guy had some of the biggest eyes I've ever seen and was SO cute and serious. I did get a few smiles out of him throughout our session.

When you receive your final images, you have a complimentary black and white version of each image as well. I like both - but I'm always a fan of black and white to really make those details and emotional connection pop.

Atlanta Newborn Photograper | Baby Troi

Toya contacted us to book a maternity and newborn session with us. Unfortunately, baby Troi had other plans and decided to enter the world at 26 weeks. We stayed in constant touch with Toya throughout her extended NICU stay to get updates on Troi and how she was doing, and this sweet little fighter came home after a couple of months!

Toya let us know that she was being released, and we scheduled her newborn session to take place a few days afterwards. When moms who have booked a maternity session have their baby before their scheduled session, we transfer any funds already paid to a newborn session. Losing money should be the least of a preemie mom's concerns after going through one of the most emotionally difficult situations a parent can experience!

Toya brought Troi in for her newborn session, and oh my! She was such a tiny and dainty little thing, and the sweetest. Troi also had a very independent personality and let me know when she didn't like being moved. She was such a deep sleeper once she settled and we flew through the newborn portion of her session.

Toya chose a simple dress from our studio wardrobe that she loved. Her husband, Troy (any guesses who baby Troi was named after?!) arrived during his lunch break and we completed the family and parent portion very quickly. I loved working with this sweet family!

Here are a few images from this amazing little fighter's newborn session!

Atlanta Family Photographer | A fun mommy and me session with grandmas!

Oh baby Leo, you are the cutest!

I first met Melissa when she scheduled maternity and newborn sessions while pregnant with Leo! She chose the park location for her maternity session, which you can see by clicking here and came in again for Leos' newborn session (click here). I photographed Leo again when he came in for our annual Santa event and was thrilled to have them come in again for a special mommy and grandma session!

Melissa followed our style guide recommendations and everyone was dressed so perfectly! I love the adorable romper she chose for Leo, and this session was honestly SUCH a blast. Leo was quite the wiggle worm, as are most nine month olds! I keep their interest by switching things up constantly and engaging them at their level. If your baby is shy, we'll meet them where they're at and quietly interact with them to draw our their personality. If your baby is rough and tumble and loves it loud, we'll amp it up a bit! Babies and kids run the show here at Lily Sophia Photography, and we love every second of it!

If you're looking for a gift for your mom and/or mother-in-law that they will appreciate so much, this is definitely one of the best options out there! You're also giving your child an incredible gift as well - the memory of how much their grandmother(s) loved them and that special relationship between them. We've even had some grandmas book sessions for themselves and their grandchildren! You can call us to talk through the different options that will work best for your family.

Enjoy a whole lot of love and snuggles in the images below!

Atlanta Family Photographer | Baby Jovette, three months (and cousin!)

Senhit called the studio to ask if we could fit her in for a  combined milestone and family session including a visiting cousin in a few images. We said, "Sure!" and fit them in for Friday morning that same week. Your chances of getting in for a week of session are usually much higher if you can make a weekday work. Weekend dates tend to be filled months in advance (but not always, so definitely check!).

When the family arrived at the studio, we started with just the cousins. There's just a three month difference! They only get to see each other a couple of times a year at most since Canada is pretty far from Atlanta!

Once we finished up with the cousins we took a few images of each baby alone and then moved on to just Jovette and her parents. She was such a smiley and happy three month old and lots of fun to photography. As most three month olds tend to do, she became sleepy and I asked her mom to hold her until she fell completely asleep which only took a few minutes. I really love capturing a few images of older babies sleeping whenever possible.

Three month old/100 Day sessions are some of my favorites to capture! Be aware that your baby won't be as strong as a six month old, so images of them sitting alone are not possible. Parents will need to participate by holding their baby so we can have a wide variety of images in your gallery! Three month olds make so many adorable expressions and we'll also have them lay on their backs and tummy for some as well if they're up for it and can hold their heads up well.

Here are a few of my favorites!

Atlanta Newborn Photographer | Baby Cedar

Lauren called the studio to find out if we had availability for her son who had already arrived. She had thought newborn photos weren't something she wanted, but as she watched her baby change each day she knew that she wanted to preserve all the tiny newborn details as much as she could. Cedar was quite the chunker, so we suggested coming in right away. Each baby is different, but generally speaking: the larger your baby is, the sooner we want to schedule your session. As babies grow they become less curly, and bigger babies usually tend to become less flexible more quickly. One thing that bigger babies do have going for them is that they usually always sleep like rocks! Cedar definitely lived up to that during his time with me!

Lauren and her husband arrived at the studio and I set to work with photographing Cedar alone for solo images. I photograph with neutral colors so that nothing distracts from your baby and all their precious little features. Your baby won't be competing with props or bright colors while they're here. Because Cedar was such a deep sleeper, we moved through his newborn portion pretty quickly. He woke up towards the end and I handed him to his mom to nurse. Babies are fed as needed while you are here. Our sessions are laid back and relaxed, so if you need to feed your baby four times during the course of your time here, or if your baby likes to eat very slowly - please know that this is perfectly okay! Your baby's comfort is our top priority, and that's what we will work around.

Once Cedar finished eating, we moved into the parent and family portion. Lauren and her husband chose to wear more casual clothing from home and followed our newborn session prep guide when making their selections. While the newborn only session can take a while and is more "complicated" in terms of getting baby wrapped and positioned just right, the parent and family part is a breeze. I'll walk you through the whole thing and give you some simple "rules" to follow and the rest flows easily, I promise!

Here are a few of my favorites!

Atlanta Baby Photographer | Chandler is six months!

I first worked with Olive when she was pregnant with her first baby for her maternity, newborn, six and nine month milestones, and First Birthday sessions. I still remember getting her text one freezing cold February morning letting me know her baby had arrived and that it was a boy! I remember it so well because I let out a big "whoop!" and my husband thought I had lost my mind. I can't help it - I get so excited for my clients!

When she texted to let me know she was expecting her second baby and also waiting to find out, I was overjoyed for her family. She and her husband are such wonderful parents, and Olive LOVES being a mom. They're always fun to spend time with, and I couldn't wait to photograph them again. We scheduled their maternity session at the park and then I sat back and waited for the text. It came...and it was ANOTHER boy and they named him Chandler. We scheduled her newborn session to take place at 10 days, but the day before the session was to take place, Olive started having some postpartum complications that required some attention. Sometimes this happens and you just can't plan for it. We pushed out the session another week to ensure that Olive would be 100%. She was so worried that Chandler would be too big for newborn images, but as you can see (click here), that was not the case at all. It's also fun to look back at Chandler's newborn images to see the progression of his absolutely amazing hair!

Olive brought Chandler in for his six month session and picked a new dress from the studio wardrobe. She had him wear an outfit she brought with her and that had belonged to big brother. Six month sessions are so much fun, and a lot of times moms will opt to make it more focused on their baby with some mommy and me and let dad off the hook. However you want to structure it is completely up to you!

We had so much fun during their session - I seriously cannot get over his curls or his huge brown eyes. I absolutely adore every image taken from their session, but I'm sharing just a few below! Enjoy the Chandler cuteness!

Atlanta Maternity Photographer | A Field Maternity session with Busola, Jude & Ayo

Busola called the studio to ask about scheduling a maternity and newborn session for her second baby. She was in love with the field location and knew that's where she wanted to shoot. Busola expressed a bit of concern about scheduling a maternity session because her first child was born quite early, and she was a little gun shy about it possibly happening again. We assured her that if that happened, any funds paid towards maternity would be transferred to a newborn session. Sometimes life throws unexpected things your way!

A couple of weeks before her session, Busola and her son came to the studio to look through the wardrobe and discuss different options of what to wear. She chose an open front gown from the wardrobe and let me know she was renting a blush gown from Rent the Runway that she loved as her other option. We exchanged emails a few times regarding her son and husband's wardrobe and were all set for their session!

We had absolutely beautiful weather on the evening of their session and headed out to the field. Busola's mother in law came along to be the handler for their family pet! If you are planning to include your pup(s) in your outdoor session, bringing along someone to be responsible for them is strongly recommended. Just let us know you're interested in bringing them along when you inquire, and well discuss their personalities and our recommendations for the best location based on that!

We had a lot of fun exploring the field, and they are such a loving family! Their interaction with each other was wonderful to observe, and you can see how much Ayo loves his parents. Their baby girl couldn't ask for a lovelier family!

Atlanta Baby Photographer | Owen is six months!

Matney contacted the studio to ask about scheduling a milestone session for his son, Owen. We often have dads call to schedule sessions! They're either the person in the family responsible for choosing their family photographer, or they're surprising their partner. In this case, Matney told his wife that he wanted to remember Owen as a baby and showed her our website that he had found while searching for Atlanta photographers.

I actually met the family the weekend before their session when they came in for their Santa session! I knew they would be lots of fun to work with and was just dying over how cute Owen was. Jen looked through the wardrobe to see if there might be anything she wanted to wear, and we talked at length about what good options from her own closet would be. She ultimately did decide on wearing something new that she purchased for her session, which looked great on her!

I always suggest families bring along a special lovey for their six month and/or one year milestone sessions. It's such a neat way to show how your child is growing over time since their lovey stays the same size and they do not. They brought along an adorable stuffed elephant for him!

We started the session with family and parent images, moved to solo portraits, and then ended with a few more family and parent images. My clients receive their final gallery in both color and black and white. I've chosen to share this particular session in all black and white images since I love them so much!

Owen, you're adorable, and your parents are awesome!

Atlanta Newborn Photographer | Baby Joseph

Alecia and Michael were so excited for the arrival of their first baby - a little boy! Alecia requested to add on hair and makeup services, and when they arrived at the studio she was a little overwhelmed with all of the options available to her in the wardrobe. She had been worried about finding something that would fit her since she's on the petite side, but we assured her that it wouldn't be a problem. We were right - she absolutely LOVED the dress she chose to wear as soon as she put it in. If I remember correctly, there was a gasp when she saw herself in it. Michael had brought a few options, and we chose a plain t-shirt for him to wear. A t-shirt? You betcha! My number one goal for you is for EACH of you to feel comfortable in what you're wearing and to be happy with how you look. I have men in my studio who are most comfortable and confident in a three piece suit. I have other men who want to wear jeans and a t-shirt. Neither way is wrong - my concern is with color, not the level of dressiness or casualness. So if your guy wants to wear a cotton t-shirt with jeans, that's perfectly okay, and it's welcomed in my studio.

For reference, our shortest female adult client was 4'10", and our tallest was 6'2". We have various lengths and sizes (0-16) and have yet to have a client not be able to find something they liked. Clients are also more than welcome to wear their own clothing if they prefer! We'll provide a super easy and to the point style guide, and we're available via email to go through things with you, or we can schedule a quick studio consult. Our goal is to make your experience as easy and stress free as we possibly can.

Alecia settled into the hair and makeup chair, and I got started with Joseph's newborn solo images. He lasted for about thirty minutes before he woke up needing to eat, so Alecia nursed him in the makeup chair while Michael and I chatted. Michael is a videographer, so it was fun to talk in technical terms since photography and videography share basic principles. He had a few questions for me about my equipment and expressed that he had no idea how much went into newborn photography in terms of getting the perfect images. I asked him a few about the video editing software he used. When Alecia finished Joseph was content and asleep again and we were able to wrap up the rest of his solo portraits quite quickly.

We moved into parent and family images, and it was so sweet to watch Alecia and Michael with Joseph. You could tell how blissfully happy they were to be parents, and the images exude the feeling of calm and content that was present in the studio that day.

Here are a few of my favorites from their session!

Atlanta Maternity Photographer | A special kind of maternity session

The very first thing you should know about this session is that it wasn't photographed in Georgia! I sometimes travel to other states for sessions as my schedule allows, and often stick to the NYC area and Charlotte, North Carolina area for travel sessions. This particular family was located in northwest Arkansas. I've also traveled to South Carolina, Arizona, Florida, and Virginia for sessions.

Morgan asked me to come and shoot a family maternity session and I immediately accepted. I've known Morgan for a while as she is a fellow photographer! I know how difficult it is for photographers to find a photographer... if we could just clone ourselves, we would! Since that's not possible, I'm always happy when another photographer entrusts me with their images. It's a compliment I don't take lightly!

Morgan has the most beautiful family - a spunky little gal named Zooey and a heart breakingly handsome son with one of the coolest names ever...Beckham. Ian, her husband, is a wonderful father and absolutely adores his wife. Morgan's parents live with the family and I was thrilled that they were joining in as well. Fun fact: this was the first professional photography session that Morgan's parents had ever participated in! Her mom was so nervous about it, but quickly realized there was no reason to be and we all had a BLAST.

When we started shooting, the sky was cloudy and overcast but then the sun broke out at the end. I think this session is a perfect representation of how a session can look both ways - different, but equally gorgeous!

A couple of months after our time together, they welcomed a gorgeous little girl!

Here are just a FEW of my favorites... Morgan, your family is so wonderful and I'm so happy we were able to make this happen!

Atlanta Family Photographer | Fiona is six months!

Fiona first came to visit me as a newborn, and I loved photographing her then. I was so excited to hear she was coming in for a milestone session to celebrate six months AND that grandma was coming along!

I was incredibly close to both sets of my grandparents growing up, and am lucky enough to still have a grandmother here with me (I'm almost 38 years old for reference!). I cherish the photos I have of my grandparents and I together. For the set of grandparents that I lost to cancer seven years ago, the photos are some of the only tangible memories I have of them. Being able to share them with my children (two of whom weren't born when they passed away and one of whom was too little to remember) is so important to me. So - when I hear that a family wants to include a children's grandparent(s), I am ALL about it!

Grandma brought in her favorite book, and we took a few images of special grandma time. We then moved into some solo portraits of Miss Fiona (isn't she the CUTEST?!) and some with her mama. I absolutely loved shooting such a special session for this family!

Atlanta Maternity Photographer | Carolyn & Craig, a park maternity session

Carolyn called the studio phone to ask if we had any availability for a last minute maternity and newborn session. She had been on the fence about whether she wanted any photos and had decided that she did! One of her best friends is a professional photographer in NYC and Carolyn had asked her for some help in deciding who to use in the Atlanta area. Her friend looked through a few websites, and recommended she choose us! I am always honored when anyone chooses to work with us, but I do love it when I hear that another professional in the industry has given their stamp of approval - which actually happens quite a bit!

We were able to fit Carolyn in right away for a maternity fitting, and got super lucky with the weather! Our HMUA's were even available at the last minute also. While we do book quite far in advance, it's always worth checking in with us if you're a last minute client. We just may be able to fit you into our schedule. If you wait until the last minute, be prepared to schedule on a weeknight as that is often our only availability.

The evening of the session, we headed down to the park location and got started. The light was beautiful, and Carolyn and Craig snuggled up to each other. They were one of the most naturally affectionate couples that I've ever worked with, and I loved it. If you're not naturally affectionate, please don't worry about that! I promise to make your experience stress free and we'll push past that initial awkwardness. Maternity sessions are relaxed and fun - I will give you guided direction for natural interaction. It's totally normal to feel like you don't know what you're doing in front of the camera and to feel a little bit nervous. I'll walk you through the whole thing from start to finish!

Here are a few of my favorites from their gorgeous session!

Atlanta Newborn Photography | Baby Ella

Miriam contacted us to see if we had availability for a maternity and newborn session since she was booking a bit late in the game since they had recently relocated from another state. We did have room left, and were able to fit her in relatively quickly! Miriam let us know that she and her husband were waiting until birth to find out if they were having a little boy or girl. I think it's a surprise regardless of when you choose to find out, but I do have a special place in my heart for those who choose to wait....because I waited to find out with all three of my babies!

Baby GIRL Ella surprised her mama by coming a little bit earlier than planned and had a short stay in the NICU as a result. When clients have this happen, we simply wait until baby has been released from the hospital. We've worked with many preemies (even some micro preemies!) and their sessions still look just like a newborn session would. We are also constantly in touch with our clients who have a baby in the NICU because we care about them and their baby, and we want to hear how everyone (baby AND parents) are doing and if we can be of support in any way.

Ella was released from the hospital relatively quickly (although I'm sure it felt like eternity for her parents!) and the new family of three came in for their newborn session. Miriam already knew which dress she wanted to wear since it had been a favorite from her maternity fitting. Many of our moms fall in love with multiple dresses during their fitting and become familiar with what we have - so when they show up for their newborn session, there isn't much debate about what to choose from it.

Ella was a tiny and adorable little peanut, and I got started with her solo portraits while Miriam settled in the makeup chair. We offer this as an add on service, and our HMUA team is absolutely fantastic. They are all incredibly experienced with every skin tone and are true professionals. All our newborn moms who choose to add on this service express relief at one less thing to do the morning of their session, and really enjoy pampering themselves. For most of our moms, it's the first time they've put any focus on themselves at all since their baby was born! For those who don't really ever wear makeup, don't worry! Our artists are experts at a very clean and classic beauty look that will enhance your features, erase that look of sleep deprivation, and look very natural. Fact about me: I don't wear makeup. I literally don't own any! But whenever I have my own family or personal photos taken, I always call one of the members of my team in for professional help and always love the results.

Ella was quite the sleepy little thing (as is the norm with most babies born early) and we sailed through her solo portraits. Dad arrived at the studio a bit later, and we moved into family and parent images. I really love seeing my clients who have worked with me for maternity sessions as new parents! There is such a difference in their demeanor and even in their dynamic, and it's such a beautiful thing to witness. The love they have for each other is magnified, and watching them hold and admire the little life they created together is truly something else. I truly do have the best job in the world!

Here are just a few of this little sweetheart and her parents!

Atlanta Maternity Photography | A Mountain Maternity Session with Irene, Steve & Oona

Many of my clients first work with me for their maternity session with their first child and then choose to keep working with me throughout the years as their family grows... for newborn, milestone, and family photos each year. I absolutely love developing relationships over the years and watching families grow. Sessions also become easier and easier each time for clients and it eventually feels like we're just hanging out for an hour!

I worked with Irene and Steve several years ago when they were expecting their first daughter, Oona. Oona is such a fun little girl but definitely has opinions and preferences! One of them is to wear high heels - the sparklier the better! I reassured Irene that this wasn't a problem and to roll with it. Someday when Oona is an adult they can look back and laugh!

Irene came into the studio to try on dresses and fell in love with one that was reversible! She wore it both ways during her session as you'll see in the photographs. Because I have worked with their family for so long, I had pulled a few dress options for Oona from our studio wardrobe for little girls. I had a feeling that this gorgeous peaches and cream dress with beautiful detailing would be absolutely perfect for Oona! Steve and Irene agreed immediately when they saw it - and it even matched her shoes.

Oona is a child that doesn't like to have her picture taken. She wants to explore and do her own thing. Irene and Steve are two parents who fully embrace her true personality and want authenticity in their images. So simply put: if Oona doesn't want to smile for the camera or make eye contact, they love the natural family interaction images just as much, if not more! It can sometimes feel frustrating for clients when their child doesn't want to "cooperate". Remember that children often love to push buttons! If they can see they are managing to make you feel stressed out, they will sometimes amp that up with glee. (I speak from personal parenting experience with my own three children!) Going into our time together with a laid back attitude and having fun is the key. I'll help with some guidance for that! I'll also gauge how your little one reacts to me and temper my approach accordingly. Every child is so different - I have literally seen it all at this point!

We started at the base of the mountain and worked our way up to the top. This location is gorgeous, but be forewarned that it does require a bit of effort on your part! For exertion determining purposes: my 2 year old son was able to hike his way up with no assistance. Should you choose to shoot at the mountain, please be prepared to carry your child to the top, or to take frequent breaks for rest if needed.

Without further ado, here are a few of my favorites from this family maternity session. I absolutely love Oona's personality!

Atlanta Baby Photography | Frances is ONE!

I first met baby Frances when she was teeny tiny.... as in, just born teeny tiny! I photographed her Fresh 48 session at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta and then again for her six month milestone session. Her parents are some of the sweetest people I know, and they're so much fun to have in the studio. I'm so looking forward to their fall session in October this year!

Liz chose a dress to wear from the studio wardrobe and consulted our style guide for ideas and inspiration of what to have Frances wear. She also added on hair and makeup services from our HMUA team. Many moms really love treating themselves to these services and relaxing before the session. They'll pack up what dad needs to bring (or bring it themselves) and then all meet at the studio for their session time. Our HMUA's prep you in our studio office or their own home studio if they're close by (less than ten minutes tops!).

First Birthday sessions are not necessarily about a cake smash! They opted to skip this as they wanted the focus to be on their family and on solo one year portraits. Whether you include a cake or not is entirely up to you!

Frances is pretty much the most adorable little thing ever. She has these big blue eyes and the sweetest little personality. It's incredible how much she looks like her dad, and I loved watching her with each of her parents. Capturing the unique dynamic of individual parents with their child is really neat to see! We generally almost always begin First Birthday sessions with parent and family images. This allows your child to feel safe in your arms and get used to me and the sound of the camera shutter. We then move to solo images of your child and then change their outfit if you choose to do that. If a cake smash is incorporated we end with that.

Most one year olds don't have an attention span or the energy to last more than 30ish minutes, so I photography First Birthday sessions very efficiently. We move from one thing to the next, and take snack or milk breaks as your child needs them. We'll send you a tip sheet before your session that goes over the most important things to help prepare!

Isn't this family adorable!?

Atlanta Newborn Photographer | Baby Holden

I first met Mary and Matt over two years ago when I photographed their maternity, birth, and newborn sessions for their oldest son, Harrison. Mary texted me as soon as she found out she was pregnant with baby #2 to make sure she could get on the calendar again! As time went on, I was thrilled for her as she found out she was expecting another little boy. Brothers close in age = high potential for built in best friends for life!

I photographed the family maternity session in the winter which was absolutely beautiful and so much fun, and then was present for Holden's birth at Johns Creek Emory. It was amazing how much he looked like Harrison at birth but he's since turned into a mini me of his mama!

Mary brought him in for his newborn session and worked with our HMUA team for her makeup. I started working with Holden for his solo newborn images and just loved capturing all his little baby rolls and details. Those detail shots are some of my favorites: it's so easy to forget what your babies looked like when they were tiny! I photograph babies on neutral colored backgrounds and in simple wraps with natural posing. I never force a baby into a position they don't like - we are very baby led in practice around here! Sometimes babies will protest at first but once they're settled are nice and comfy.

Matt arrived with big brother Harrison and we started with the sibling and family images right away. Harrison wasn't even yet 18 months, so we had to be a little bit creative. Depending on the age of big brother or sister, it may not be safe for them to lay next to baby or interact with baby alone. In those cases, we simply frame sibling shots while a parent or both parents are right there to supervise and protect the baby. No matter how young a toddler may be, almost every single one loves to show off that they know where baby's nose or toes are! We have lots of little games and tricks to employ when it comes to engaging wiggly young toddlers. While we certainly cannot guarantee older sibling cooperation, I can state that we have yet to have a session where we weren't able to work with them to get what we needed!

I have loved working with Mary and Matt and getting to know them over the years. This session was so much fun to shoot - here are some of my favorites of sweet baby Holden and his incredible family.
